The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $12 million to six umbilical-cord blood banks across the nation in an effort to help leukemia sufferers and others with blood diseases. These parients would normally rely on iffy bone-marrow or stem-cell transplants for potential cures. Cord blood is more helpful; recipients don't need a match with donor's genes. The money will help the banks establish a national inventory of core blood. Fitness Journal Feb 07.
